Samuel Beckett’s work is dark, his commentary on the human condition is unforgiving, the whole is poignantly funny, an exercise in masterful gallows humour and dark comedy. Expect an intellectual work-out and you won’t be disappointed. The language is beautiful and Lisa Dwan’s performances are, by all accounts, exactly as Beckett himself would have wanted them. All of which makes it an authentic Beckett experience as rare as it is remarkable.

Not I, Footfalls and Rockaby – The story

Not I is a deep, dark, intense monologue in which a woman’s floating, disembodied mouth is set high against a pitch black backdrop, lit by a beam of light. The mouth splurges out a fast, complex stream of consciousness, spoken to Beckett’s specifications ‘at the speed of thought’.

Rockaby takes an uncomfortably comedic look at loneliness via another compelling character, a prematurely old woman. She sits in an eerie rocking chair which seems to rock on its own in a play that caused a stir back in 1980 when it was first performed in New York. Quirky and thought provoking, this is a monologue you won’t forget in a hurry.

Footfalls stars poverty-stricken May in her ragged clothes, waiting for her mother to die in a bedroom off the cold, bleak landing she paces. It was first performed by Billie Whitelaw, for whom it was written, at the 1976 Samuel Beckett Festival, astonishing and delighting the audience.
