The Full Monty in London

The Full Monty – An unforgettable feel-good show

It takes some balls to become a male stripper. And that’s exactly what these boys have, a group of ordinary Sheffield men whose jobs at a steelworks have come to an end with disastrous consequences. Depressed, broke, bored, feeling unworthy and in one case close to suicide, they decide enough is enough and start to make changes… big changes!

The Full Monty - The story

South Yorkshire’s steel mills are on their last legs. Most of the workers have been laid off and two friends, Gaz and Dave, have been reduced to stealing scrap from the abandoned mills and selling it. Life is tough and it’s getting tougher. Until Gaz is inspired by seeing a group of women queuing for tickets to see The Chippendales, a famous make stripper act.

Desperate to make his child support payments and feel good about himself again, Gaz decides if they can do it, so can he. So he gathers together a group of six unemployed local men, all of whom are suffering to one degree or other, and they form their own striptease group.

Determined to make their act different from any other, they decide to strip completely naked. And so the story begins, as each man deals with his problems with the help of his mates. Their self-esteem improves as they polish their act and The Full Monty, as they name the group, ends up being the saviour of their sanity, families, happiness, health and well-being.

Expect the full gamut of emotions through happy to sad, and a wonderfully happy ending that’ll see you dancing out of the theatre on an emotional high. While hilarious and touching, the show also deals with serious themes including unemployment, fathers’ rights, poverty, depression, impotence, homosexuality, obesity, working class culture and suicide. But it’s a laugh a minute all the same: stirring stuff, as the Brits say!

The Full Monty song list

The same rocking song list as the film makes for a very special treat as the boys strut their stuff to a host of well-known tunes including Zodiac by David Lindup, Moving on Up by M People, Make Me Smile by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel plus We Are Family by Sister Sledge, What a Feeling by Irene Cara (from the movie Flash Dance) and, aptly, The Stripper by Joe Loss & His Orchestra.

See the film first

Some of the acting was good and the last ten minutes of the play made it worthwhile going. The film was much better, less focus on unimportant matter, more focus on significant content and just more convincing all round. That being said, worth a visit although like most London West End shows nowadays, the price of the seats was out of proportion with a visit to the theatre.
