The Nether - The story

The US playwright Jennifer Haley is responsible for this incredibly clever and perceptive multi-award winning piece, where The Nether rules the online world and drives our relationship with reality.

Behind the technical scenes, in the real life 'in world', a detective story takes place. The unpleasant and amoral entrepreneur Sims is ridiculously rich thanks to his online invention. It's called the Hideaway, and it's a picture-perfect digital representation of a beautiful Victorian country estate where his customers indulge their every whim... including murdering and abusing the young 'children' who live in the house.

The problem is, the children aren't real. They're actually avatars of grown-ups. But should it make a difference? The police think so. In their eyes child abuse is child abuse, and the dedicated young detective Morris is determined to get to the bottom of the matter and identify the server on which Sims' nasty world sits.

The emotional content makes this much, much more than just another who-dunnit. It explores feelings and emotions in the context of this future technology, looking at how much people can suffer when their real and virtual lives come into conflict. Best of all, it isn't entirely clear what's right and what's wrong – the play leaves the audience to make up their own minds.

Clear and visionary, satisfyingly twisty and turny, the questions the play asks are highly pertinent in an age where the online world sometimes seems more real than the actual world. The Independent says it's “A brilliant production, I urge you to go”. The Times calls it “A seriously intelligent play, important and thought provoking.
