It's School of Rock! The Broadway version of this brand new musical, based on the hit movie, has Andrew Lloyd Webber and Julian Fellowes to thank for its broad people-appeal. They're both involved in the production, a considerable theatrical accolade in itself.

If you loved the antics of Jack Black in the movie, you'll enjoy the musical theatre version even more. Worldwide the film grossed more than a hundred and thirty one million US dollars. And it held sway for years as the biggest-grossing comedy movie of all time, until it was finally overtaken in 2015 by Pitch Perfect. Now this hugely popular story takes to the stage.

School of Rock musical – The story

The plot follows the struggling rock singer and guitarist, Dewey Finn. He's been kicked out of his own rock band because of his ridiculous on-stage antics and he's at a loose end, bored and broke. When he decides to disguise himself as a substitute teacher at a prestigious private school, all hell lets loose.

Dewey's students are a talented musical bunch and Dewey encourages them to form a rock band. But his motivation is far from honourable - with a bit of luck his fourth graders will beat the favourites, his old band No Vacancy, and win the Battle of the Bands contest. And he'll be able to pay his rent.

This is a comedy and, of course, everything goes horribly pear-shaped. But despite a series of madcap misadventures and total disasters, Dewey eventually proves that there's no stopping the school of rock.

No matter what your age, if you've ever fancied playing in a rock band you'll be totally inspired by the amazingly talented band of youngsters who form the stage band. You'll go home singing, thanks to fourteen brand new show tunes by Lloyd Webber and a host more original songs from the movie.

If you like nothing better than a big, bold musical comedy with a warm heart, this one's for you.

London Box Office customer

Blooming brilliant

Wasn’t quite sure what to expect as this was for my 11year old daughters choice of show rather than mine. It exceeded all expectations and we both thought the show was fantastic. The energy the kids and Dewey have was brilliant. Very talented cast and special mention to the drummer. Loved it

London Box Office customer

A great show

London Box Office customer

This show rocks

Virtually perfect in every way - brilliant fun, the only minor comment would be that the ‘jack black’ dialogue seemed a little rushed in places, but these poor folks do play the show every night 6 days a week. Absolute pros, especially the kids.

London Box Office customer

Great show

Great show for all ages. Very interesting and fun. Just like the film. The lead guy was just like Jack Black from the film version

Excellent show

Loved the show, the kids in it were amazing. It was fast paced - my kids 11 and 9 loved it.

London Box Office customer

Amazing performances by all - from main character to supporting actors. Everyone gave 100% and well deserved the standing ovation at the end. Our seats were 'restricted view' which didn't take away from our experience but if we were to see the show again, we would treat ourselves to a better view so that we could enjoy the show from all aspects. Thank you to the whole cast of 'School of Rock '!

London Box Office customer

An absolute blast

If you get the chance to see this show grab It with both hands. I was blown away by the songs, music and the talent of the kids who’s performances were awesome

School of Rock - excellent

London Box Office customer

Wonderfully entertaining! A must see

I loved this show! After seeing and loving the movie I was concerned the musical could be a let down but it was far from it. Musical didn't deviate from the movie with the casting of characters spot on. I noted all spectators were captivated from the quite young to older. We were seated a bit back in the theatre which was no disadvantage at all Would recommend this for all to see 10 out of 10

London Box Office customer

A MUST see!

London Box Office customer

Brilliant a must see!

Fantastic show the children so talented, playing the music instruments themselves very professional yet fun!

London Box Office customer

Good entertainment quite American and Disney like . Good family entertainment .

London Box Office customer

Fun show for all the family

Had trouble finding the theatre initially, thought we were going to miss it. The theatre seating was great, I doubt anyone had a bad view, the stage could be clearly seen from every seat in the house. I would like to have heard some familiar songs like they did in the film. But a great show, fun and entertaining for all the family.

London Box Office customer

Top musical

London Box Office customer

Brilliant show all round and would love to see it again

We really enjoyed the show it was great

London Box Office customer

Family Rocking without any doubt!!!

Took my 2 kids (15) and (20) and my wife - who is not big fan of musicals - but the School of Rock was a winner on all fronts - awesome. The tickets were expensive - almost £400 quid for 4 of us - but had 2 birthday celebrations - and was worth every penny and a lot more.

London Box Office customer

Thoroughly enjoy!

Really enjoy the show, would recommend to anyone.

London Box Office customer

Amazing

Fantastic efforts from all . To see the young cast sparkle was brilliant

London Box Office customer

Simply outstanding

Such a superb show and the kids are just amazing! The theatre is modern and the seating is the best ever as the level of gradient is the best, no person would block your view! Would see another show at this theatre!!

London Box Office customer

The ultimate gig

If you've always wanted to be in the crowd at the final gig in the film, this is your chance to experience it! A great show

London Box Office customer

Great, same as the film

London Box Office customer

Briliant

Casting was brilliant just like the film. Would recommend to all age groups.

Fresh Look: SCHOOL OF ROCK at the Gillian Lynne Theatre

26 Sep 2018

School of Rock This West End production brings to the stage all of the fun, quotable moments of the film but with an added underlying story about children under pressure from pushy parents. Andrew Lloyd-Webber has used the songs from the Jack Black movie but added a number of extra solos and anthems, including the catchy and rebellious ‘Stick it to the Man’.

Review: SCHOOL OF ROCK at the New London Theatre

25 Sep 2017

School of Rock The Musical Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Julian Fellowes (hardly the types generally associated with rebelliousness), are ‘the talent’ behind this stage adaptation of Richard Linklater’s 2003 film, in which a down-on-his-luck, guitar-playing slob, Dewey Finn (played with gusto in the West End by Gary Trainor), surreptitiously wangles a job as a supply teacher at a posh prep school, where he introduces his already musically talented young charges, to the joys of rock.

Review: SCHOOL OF ROCK at the New London Theatre

17 Nov 2016

School of Rock It's been a tough few decades for Andrew Lloyd Webber since the 1980s when announcement of a new show by him would prompt a ticket buying frenzy keeping hits like EVITA, CATS and PHANTOM in the West End for years. Of the big mega hits only PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is still running.

I say "only" but it's an extraordinary achievement to have created something that's been so loved by so many people for so long in London and on Broadway. In recent years however the composer's new pieces have failed to take root and grow into long running hits.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is as busy as ever

04 Apr 2016

Andrew Lloyd Webber The UK’s Greatest living theatre composer shows no signs of slowing down after five decades at the top.

In a recent interview his regular lyricist, Don Black, has revealed plans are afoot to revamp ALW’s latest flop STEPHEN WARD with the addition of new songs and there are still hope that a newly conceived Australian production of the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA sequel, LOVE NEVER DIES, will come to the UK.

The Youtube video allows you to navigate all angles of the classroom for an immersive experience of the song.

We've seen this technology used in sports videos but this is the first time it is applied to a musical number.
