Adapted for the stage by William Nicholson, Shadowlands tells the story of C. S. Lewis during his time as an academic at Oxford, who is perfectly happy being a permanent bachelor, until he meets the outspoken American poet Joy Davidman, sparking an unexpected but powerful romance. Performances by Hugh Bonneville and Maggie Siff illuminate their characters' backstories with a playful sensitivity while avoiding any sense of clunky caricature.

Directed by Anna Ledwich, the cast of this intelligent and emotionally substantial play is an absolute privilege and a joy to watch. Bird Grove is a typical and topical new play that puts one of England’s greatest writers, Mary Ann Evans, centre stage in a poignant tale of family ties and determination.
