The Lion King in London

Disney's The Lion King is an unparalleled West End theatrical experience, bringing the enchanting world of the African savannah to the stage in a mesmerising spectacle for all ages. Adapted from the 1994 animation film, The Lion King is one of the most successful stage musicals of all time with performances at the Lyceum Theatre selling out to audiences for over two decades.

Why You Should See Disney's The Lion King

  • Over 200 puppets are used in the production to bring the African savannah to life, including 39 hyenas, 22 wildebeests and 14 lionesses. 50 performers and puppeteers are needed to make this happen!
  • The musical is set to a timeless score by Elton John and Tim Rice, The Lion King contains beloved songs like "Can You Feel The Love Tonight", "The Circle of Life" and "I Just Can't Wait To Be King."
  • The production has earned more than 70 major arts awards during its time, including the 1999 Olivier Award for Best Costume Design.

What is The Lion King about?

The Lion King is a global sensation that was adapted from the Disney film. The film alone is the highest-grossing hand-drawn animated feature of all time, it has transferred to the stage seamlessly.

The musical tells the tale of Simba, a young lion prince who embarks on an epic journey of self-discovery and redemption. After the tragic death of his father, Mufasa, Simba flees his kingdom, feeling responsible for his father's demise. Along the way, he encounters many vibrant characters including the wise mandrill Rafiki, the comedic meerkat Timon, and the loyal warthog Pumbaa. Together they help Simba find his inner courage and embrace his destiny as the rightful king of the Pride Lands.

Directed and designed by Julie Taymor, The Lion King is a tour de force in professional puppetry, delivering a genuine spectacle that’s very hard to forget. Eighteen foot high giraffes canter along the aisles, amazingly real-looking gazelles trot by, and a herd of wildebeest stampede just a few feet away.

The Lion King continues to inspire audiences with its timeless story of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of family. Enjoy a slice of West End history with a trip to the Lyceum Theatre for this family musical.

Royal circle seats, sound and acoustics could have been better from these seats, not enough toilets for the number of people and a short break meant we were late back. Otherwise great performance

Awesome. Blown away!

I had seen this over 20 years ago and loved. This time I wanted to take my 12 year son. He had no interest in going. He thought it was for kids and will have people in puppet outfits. At interval time I asked how was it and his response “ok. It’s pretty good”. He loved it. And I loved it as if I was watching it for the first time. Everything was perfect. Even if you don’t like theatre, or Disney, you will walk away loving this show. A must watch! I’ll go again.

Amazing back-drops, sets, costumes. Loved the actors popping out in the auditorium to do various things. Enjoyed seeing and hearing the drummers in the boxes. Love the music especially the parts where the dancers perform to the African music but especially love the songs. Thought the puppetry was amazing. We went to a matinee with lots of children present in the audience. I would advise going in the evening to see this show. I haven't been to a show in a long time so was surprised to see so much popcorn, drinks and sweets consumed during the performance.

Looks like the actors were tired

The old Simba was clearly losing his voice and was not really articulating the lyrics, especially on the last part of “can’t you feel the love tonight”. Nala was also giving me the impression that she was loosing her breath when she’s singing, head tone was good but during her solo with the rest of rest of the lionesses, she was running out of breath. I think the staff should also keep an eye on everyone, as I saw someone secretly taking a video during the show.

Lion King lives on

Excellent show, very good dancing when ensemble used. Brilliant costumes, lighting, reasonable story line. Some people in the audience could not seem to exist without their mobile phones on, to the detriment of the enjoyment of others. The use of their phones was nipped in the bud quite promptly by the attendants. Incomprehensible to me that people at a live show would need to look at a screen...

Much changed

I saw this same show 8 years ago and was blown away. However this time around wasn't so and more disappointed. I found the acting apart from mufasa, rafiki and pumba to be underwhelming. Examples being scar seemed to either mis time and speed up "be prepared" and reminded me of the live action film, which also wasn't a fan. Also he seemed to be less dominant than the character demands. I found young Simba's singing in "can't wait to be king" to slow and pronunciation of the words almost spoken, same for be prepared. Zazus character became more and more panto as the performance went on which actually annoyed me. I did like the singing of the usually background music from the film. The version of feel the love tonight seemed to lack emphasis the song deserves. The random adding of scar wanting Nala as a queen was weird and lead knowhere. One massive bug bear was mufasa over touching young simba. I get there's meant to be a father son emotion but he doesn't need to touch him that much. As a father of young children really put me off.

Limp Cast

I had been looking forward to seeing the show for Many years however struggled to afford the tickets, sadly I found the show to be quite limp and nowhere near the expectations I had set. Rafiki, Timon and Pumba saved the show, they were amazing as was Scar, however the rest I found quite underwhelming. I couldn’t understand the need to use teddies on sticks when the actual characters were present (Pumba and Nuala). The theatre was uncomfortable especially if you are a taller or larger person, lots of people were in their on phones and talking.
