The Lion King in London

Disney's The Lion King is an unparalleled West End theatrical experience, bringing the enchanting world of the African savannah to the stage in a mesmerising spectacle for all ages. Adapted from the 1994 animation film, The Lion King is one of the most successful stage musicals of all time with performances at the Lyceum Theatre selling out to audiences for over two decades.

Why You Should See Disney's The Lion King

  • Over 200 puppets are used in the production to bring the African savannah to life, including 39 hyenas, 22 wildebeests and 14 lionesses. 50 performers and puppeteers are needed to make this happen!
  • Set to a timeless score by Elton John and Tim Rice, The Lion King contains beloved songs like 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight', 'The Circle of Life' and 'I Just Can't Wait To Be King'.
  • Whether you grew up with the film or are discovering it for the first time, following Simba's journey in this musical is one filled with adventure, humour and a heartwarming story.

What is The Lion King about?

The Lion King is a global sensation that was adapted from the Disney film. The film alone is the highest-grossing hand-drawn animated feature of all time, it has transferred to the stage seamlessly.

The musical tells the tale of Simba, a young lion prince who embarks on an epic journey of self-discovery and redemption. After the tragic death of his father, Mufasa, Simba flees his kingdom, feeling responsible for his father's demise. Along the way, he encounters many vibrant characters including the wise mandrill Rafiki, the comedic meerkat Timon, and the loyal warthog Pumbaa. Together they help Simba find his inner courage and embrace his destiny as the rightful king of the Pride Lands.

Directed and designed by Julie Taymor, The Lion King is a tour de force in professional puppetry, delivering a genuine spectacle that’s very hard to forget. Eighteen foot high giraffes canter along the aisles, amazingly real-looking gazelles trot by, and a herd of wildebeest stampede just a few feet away.

The Lion King continues to inspire audiences with its timeless story of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of family. Enjoy a slice of West End history with a trip to the Lyceum Theatre for this family musical.

The Lion King Frequently Asked Questions

What is the running time for The Lion King?

The Lion King’s running time is 2 hours and 30 minutes including an interval. Matinee performances take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:30pm and finish at 5pm, and evening performances begin at 7:30pm and finish at 10pm.

Is The Lion King appropriate for small children?

The Lion King is a family friendly show, however the recommended minimum age is 6 years old and children younger than 3 years old will not be admitted into the auditorium. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Does the show use special effects?

The show includes theatrical smoke and fog effects along with strobe light effects.

How much are tickets?

Ticket prices can vary depending on how far in advance you book, whether it’s peak season (i.e. the week before Christmas), and where you choose to sit in the auditorium. Seats with restricted views are typically cheaper - for instance, the first row of the Grand Circle.

How will I receive my tickets?

Your e-tickets will be emailed to you to download on your phone or print at home. Tickets cannot be collected at the Box Office.

What seats should I select to best enjoy the show?

However, the Royal Circle and Grand Circle allow a panoramic view of the stage from above, which makes for a more cinematic experience.

Great show

A fantastic family show with incredible effects and costume mechanisms. Teens and kids loved it as did the adults. My negatives for it are that the tickets are a major expense and on top of that theirs is then a charge per booster seat for any kids (at a show based on a kids film). We were surprised there was no cut off on letting late audience members in after the start time, and no attendants asking people to remain quiet when they talked in full voice the majority of the way through.

Unfortunately, not the experience I hoped for

As a huge musical fan, I was really looking forward to this, but unfortunately it didn’t quite deliver the magic I expected. The performances of the main characters (Mufasa, Simba, and Scar) didn’t feel as strong as I had hoped, which made it harder to connect. On top of that, the atmosphere was quite disruptive — latecomers being seated and the noise of popcorn and chatter made it difficult to fully relax and be swept away. I know how magical this show can be, so I wish the environment had allowed for that here.

Great show but freezing cold

The show was great, especially the costumes and music. However, it was much too cold where we were sitting (stalls H11). Throughout the entire show, ice-cold air blew directly into our faces. It would have been appropriate for a musical set at the North Pole but not for one set in Africa. Despite wearing four layers of clothing, including two rain jackets, I was still cold.

Must see, enjoyed the musical.

The musical is spectacular, the story of Lion King is well known, yet the show gives the story a twist with live music and acting. Well done. I did not appreciate the LGBTIQ propoganda at the end of the show. They are people like anyone and need no propoganda to an audience that did not sign up for such a speech to collect funds for at the end.
