London Plays Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a typical play?
The average West End play tends to be approximately between two and two and a half hours in length. Most include an interval of fifteen to twenty minutes at about the midway point. But shows tend to vary in length, with shorter shows running for one and a half hours while longer ones (for instance, performances of Shakespeare’s works) can even run for three hours.
How often do plays change and how long will a particular play be on for?
It varies. Most plays on the West End have a three to six month lifespan, and theatres will often announce their season of plays or musicals in advance, allowing you plenty of time to book. Some popular shows, such as The Mousetrap (London longest-running show!) or The Woman in Black, are long-standing staples of the West End and will be running at all times of the year. Others have a strictly limited run, and will be running for as short a time as three or four weeks, or even a single night. Some specific plays are seasonal and tend to return at certain times of the year, such as A Christmas Carol, which is performed around Christmas.
Do plays have an age restriction?
Most London theatres do not admit children below the age of 3-5 years old, though certain family-friendly plays are open even to babes-in-arms. Depending on the nature of the show, some productions may have age recommendations in place due to adult themes or strong language, which will be listed clearly on their websites. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Are there interactive or immersive plays?
Alongside traditional West End productions, several shows offer interactive or immersive experiences where the audience is part of the action. Examples include Witness for the Prosecution, where audience members can be part of the jury in a courtroom, or Cabaret, where the venue has been transformed into a Berlin nightclub. Many Shakespeare plays offer an interactive element as well - venues such as the Bridge Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe offer standing seats that allow audiences to be part of the action.
